Diamond cutting and polishing are the heart of India's gemstone industry. In 2007, India produced an estimated 60% of the world's polished diamonds by value and 82% by carat weight.
In recent years, India has developed a fully integrated jewellery industry including world-recognized designers, large trade shows, and a growing domestic retail industry composed mainly of entrepreneurs.
India consumes more gold than any other country in the world - an estimated 800 tons annually.
