As the largest jewellery manufacturing center in the world, India's thriving industry is headquartered in Mumbai. The Government of India has made industry development a high priority by establishing a special zone in Mumbai for exporters and building a new bourse for domestic merchants. The primary market for jewellery exported from India is the U.S., but India's exports continue to grow to the Middle East, China, Pakistan and Russia.

Diamond cutting and polishing are the heart of India's gemstone industry. In 2007, India produced an estimated 60% of the world's polished diamonds by value and 82% by carat weight.

In recent years, India has developed a fully integrated jewellery industry including world-recognized designers, large trade shows, and a growing domestic retail industry composed mainly of entrepreneurs. India consumes more gold than any other country in the world - an estimated 800 tons annually.
