Picture Of The Lab

After intensive analysis of the Indian jewellery market, we opened our first international office in Mumbai in the summer of 2006. Our main goals in opening the India offices were to:

• Locate GSI lab services close to a major jewellery manufacturing center.

• Bring modern gem lab standards to India’s market.

• Increase security and reduce transportation logistics for customers.

• Demonstrate the ability of our MobilLab™ technology to operate halfway around the world from our New York City headquarters.

• Provide a base of operations for serving merchants in India’s fast-growing domestic jewellery market.

A Unique Approach

In setting up a fully functioning gem lab in India, we took the unique approach of combining global gem-grading standards with sensitivity to India’s domestic market.

Global Standards – All GSI offices regardless of their geographical location maintain the highest level of customer service and high-tech expertise. For example, India and New York share the same Internet-linked data base of grading reports. This gives us the flexibility to track and print reports in either India or the U.S.A., regardless where grading is performed.

Sensitivity for the Indian Market – We are offering India’s growing domestic jewellery market high-quality gem lab services. The composition of the Indian retail market is unique, and we are developing services that respond to customers’ needs. For example, many Indian merchants require gradual upgrade paths to adopt the SKU standards of the U.S. market. Security measures in India are different than in other markets, and we have enhanced supply chain security by locating our Indian labs close to the world’s leading diamond cutting/polishing and jewellery centers.

Leading-edge Technologies – In India, GSI is continuing to implement new technologies that enhance gem grading quality and efficiency. By linking each office to a central data base, GSI can coordinate the work in Mumbai with operations in New York. Even while goods are in transit, we can share data and print reports.

Cooperation with India‘s industry sources – In India, GSI is actively involved in working with polishing facilities, consulting with cutters, and interacting with other labs to coordinate cutting and grading services. We believe proximity to polishing facilities and other industry infrastructure is a valuable competitive benefit.
